The easiest way to figure out how much paint you’ll need for your project is to use our Coverage Guide. Measure the length, width and height of your items and calculate the total area to cover. Make sure you include all the sides, drawer fronts, and inside of your project items (if you are planing to paint the inside of the item). Here is a quick guide to measure a hutch.
Best for calculating your exact coverage needs.
- Step 1: Measure the width of your item in inches and then multiply times the height.
- Step 2. Multiply the width and height of all sides to be coated (including the top).
- Step 3: Add all of these totals together and divide by 144 to determine the total square feet you will need to cover.
You may need to apply 1-2 coats for maximum coverage, depending on the color and desired look. For example lighter colors may require 2 coats, while dark and muted colors may only require 1 coat. However, it depends upon your painting style, some people can cover more area than others.
As a rough guide, 1000 ml of chalk paint covers approximately 140 square feet, or the equivalent of a welsh dresser or china hutch. For most purposes, one coat of paint is enough.
A quart of Phenomena paint will cover approximately 150 square feet. Therefore, 500 ml will cover 75 square feet of area.
